Strengthening International Partnerships with the Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles

The Schwarzenegger Institute team, led by Global Director Bonnie Reiss, met with Carlos Garcia De Alba Z., the Consul General of Mexico in Los Angeles to discuss bi-lateral cooperation between California and Mexico and ways that the Institute can build on Governor Schwarzenegger’s strong relationship with Mexico. Schwarzenegger filmed several movies in Mexico and worked closely with Mexico during his tenure in the Governor’s Office.  Schwarzenegger always attended annual Border Governors’ Meetings, worked closely with Presidents Fox and Calderon and stayed in regular contact with the governors of Baja California Norte, Baja California Sur and Sonora.  Additionally, he welcomed Mexican involvement in the two Global Climate Summits he hosted, especially that of Nobel Laureate Mario Molina.

Consul General Garcia De Alba said he would like to build on the close relationship that Schwarzenegger has with Mexico and suggested a number of policy areas where the Institute and the Consulate could work together.  These included energy and the environment, international trade and travel and tourism.  Garcia De Alba and Reiss also discussed hosting a joint event either at USC or in the Mexican Consulate later this year.
