On October 18th, over 50 leaders from environmental, labor, and academic fields joined elected officials and port representatives at the Port of Long Beach to discuss California’s clean energy future. Organized by the Environmental and Public Policy Advocates (EOPA), the event highlighted the potential of offshore wind as a cornerstone of California’s climate strategy, while underscoring the critical need for green infrastructure that protects local communities and supports well-paying jobs.
Speakers included Eleanor Torres, the Port of Long Beach’s Managing Director of Strategic Advocacy; former California State Senator Fran Pavley, now at the USC Schwarzenegger Institute; and Gary Herrera, President of the International Longshore & Warehouse Union Local 13. They shared insights on the Pier Wind Project at the Port of Long Beach, emphasizing offshore wind’s role in achieving California’s climate objectives and the importance of community involvement and informed decision-making.
The event concluded with a networking reception at the Port’s new Congressman Alan Lowenthal Global Trade & Education Center, where attendees exchanged ideas on advancing the clean energy economy while safeguarding the well-being of local communities.
