Dr. Julio Frenk, the new president of the University of Miami, recently visited Los Angeles. During this visit, he met with Governor Schwarzenegger and Institute Global Director Bonnie Reiss to discuss a multi-year collaboration between the University of Miami and the Schwarzenegger Institute on policy issues including climate change, renewable energy, immigration reform, health care and education.
Frenk, originally from Mexico, is a physician, the former Secretary of Health of Mexico and the former Dean of the Faculty of Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health. He is the sixth President of the University of Miami, replacing Dr. Donna Shalala.
Both Frenk and Schwarzenegger share a vision of an interconnected globe and believe that both the University of Miami and the University of Southern California, with their diverse international student community, are great laboratories from which to produce cutting edge public policy research. The first area of collaboration the two agreed to explore was the health implications of environment and climate change.
The Institute looks forward to this important collaboration.
