In partnership with the UCLA Law Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment , the Schwarzenegger Institute invited prominent California environmental leaders to USC to learn about the Center for Public Integrity's newest project “Carbon Wars”.
Founded in 1989 and based in D.C. the Center is one of the nation’s oldest and largest nonprofit investigative news organizations. Using the tools of investigative journalism the Center's award winning journalists serve American democracy by revealing abuses of power, corruption and betrayal of public trust by powerful public and private institutions.
The Center's new multi-year focus, “Carbon Wars”, takes an unsparing look at the fossil-fuel industry- calling out companies that pollute the air and water and contribute to global warming, and regulators and politicians who can’t or won’t do their jobs to check these abuses. The Center uses data acquisition and analysis, powerful storytelling and compelling visuals to track industry influence and misinformation and document harm to human health and the environment.
Jim Morris, the Managing Editor for Environment and Labor, led the conversation at USC and solicited ideas for future stories. "Carbon Wars" officially launched on September 29th in partnership with USA Today and the Weather Channel with a story on America’s “super polluters,” the industrial sites emitting the most toxic air pollution and greenhouse gases.
The Schwarzenegger Institute was pleased to connect these award winning investigative journalists with California leaders from local and state government, NGO’s, business and academia in order to help further the goals of the "Carbon Wars" project, and the Institute looks forward to continuing the collaboration with the Center for Public Integrity and the UCLA Emmett Institute into the future.
